Principles
Pandemic increase in the prevalence of diabetes is a serious issue in the world. Tokushima prefecture especially, is notorious for having the worst diabetes mortality in Japan since 1993. Improvement of mortality in diabetic patients is the most important challenge for Tokushima prefecture. Therefore in 2010, Diabetes Therapeutics and Research Center (DTRC) was established in Tokushima University as the regional and strategic research institute for diabetes. The purpose of DTRC is (1) to improve clinical diabetes practice in the Tokushima University Hospital – the leading regional hospital in the clinical network of Tokushima prefecture, (2) to establish a global network with other departments and other institutions to develop innovative diabetic research, (3) to develop excellent basic research into translational research for clinical practice, (4) to manage the intellectual property among researchers in Tokushima University, industries, and the government of Tokushima prefecture, and (5) to educate talented medical staff who can promote innovative diabetic medicine in clinical practice.
History
| Jan 1,2010 | DTRC was established. Professor Toshio Matsumoto was appointed as the director of DTRC. Professor Seiichi Oyadomari was appointed as the director of the Division of Diabetic Research and Development, and the director of the Department of Molecular Research in DTRC. Professor Sumihare Noji was appointed as the professor of the Department of Diagnostics，and Professor Toshiaki Tamaki was appointed as professor of the Department of Drugs in the Division of Diabetic Research and Development. Professor Makoto Funaki was appointed as the professor of the Department of Clinical Research in the Division of Clinical Diabetology. |

| Jan 1, 2018 | Associate Professor Yasumasa Ikeda was appointed as the associate professor of the Department of Food and Nutrient Function and Drug Development in the Division of Diabetic Research and Development in DTRC. |
| Sep 1, 2018 | Professor Tatsuya Saitoh was promoted to professor of Laboratory of Bioresponse Regulation, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Osaka University. |
| Sep 1, 2018 | Professor Issei Imoto was promoted to Head of the Division of Molecular Genetics, Aichi Cancer Center Research Institute (additionally served as Director, Risk Assessment Center, Aichi Cancer Center Hospital). |
| Jan 1, 2020 | Associate Professor Tetsuya Ikemoto was appointed as the professor of the Department of Genetic Research in the Division of Diabetic Research and Development in DTRC. |
| April 1, 2020 | Professor Ken-ichi Aihara has moved to the Department of Community Medicine and Medical Science, Tokushima University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and continues to be active as a member of DTRC. |
